K–Fashion Odyssey is the second part of our presentation of a new wave of extraordinary avant-garde Korean fashion designers that have recently come into the spotlight. The first exhibition, A New Space Around the Body–Emerging Korean Fashion Designers, won the British Council and British Fashion Council’s International Fashion Showcase (IFS) Emerging Talent Award 2012 for Best Project at London Fashion Week. K–Fashion Odyssey is also part of this exciting annual competition.
K–Fashion Odyssey exhibits work by Chloe Kim, Gigi Jeehyun Jung, Hyein Seo, Narae Park and Rejina Pyo. These award-winning designers are graduates of some of the most prestigious fashion schools from across Europe. This new wave of Korean fashion holds an exceptionally high aesthetic value.
Through five varied installations presenting film, garments and headdresses, the exhibition offers stories and hypothetical worlds from the newest and brightest experimental talents and their Korean roots. The installations have been developed from conversations between the exhibition-makers, Sofia Hedman & Serge Martynov, and the designers.
To resonate with the adventurous voyages the designers have taken coming from South Korea, one of the world’s largest shipbuilding countries, to Europe, wooden boat sections and piping have been created, tying their unique stories together. The triangular patterns on the walls and floor in the gallery are based on navigational rhumb lines of old sea maps.
A Special thank you to Han Nefkens and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.
